So, what if I don't have an MMIC-- How do I get one?

So you’re interested in getting a medical marijuana identification card in Orange County? Well, you’ve come to the right place! Who wouldn’t want a fancy card that allows you to legally possess and use that sweet, sweet cannabis? It’s like having a VIP pass to the world of medicinal Mary Jane. So, let’s dive right into the step-by-step process, shall we?

Step 1: Before your Appointment

To obtain a medical marijuana card, complete an Application/Renewal Form. Rest assured; the process is more manageable than applying for a mortgage. The form simply serves as a means to demonstrate your commitment to fulfilling your medical marijuana requirements. 

However, it is essential to note that only Orange County residents are eligible for these cards. Applications can be printed directly from the Orange County Health Department’s webpage here. Additionally, you may opt to request an appointment via email. In that case, you can also request to be emailed a copy of all necessary application forms. 

Step 2: Meet with a licensed doctor 

If you want a medical marijuana card, the next step is to schedule a medical marijuana evaluation with a licensed doctor. This process involves a thorough medical examination to determine if you meet the qualifying conditions for medical cannabis use. Cannabis may be recommended for the following eligible medical conditions:

  • Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)
  • Anorexia
  • Arthritis
  • Cachexia (wasting syndrome)
  • Cancer
  • Chronic pain
  • Glaucoma
  • Migraine
  • Severe nausea
  • Persistent muscle spasms (for example, spasms caused by multiple sclerosis)
  • Seizures (for example, epileptic seizures)

Or, a physician may also recommend the use of cannabis to assist with chronic or persistent medical symptoms which:

  • Substantially limit your ability to conduct significant life activities
  • May cause serious harm to your safety, physical health, or mental health

It is vital to ensure that you seek out a reputable doctor who is authorized to issue medical marijuana recommendations. Be cautious of unlicensed clinics or individuals who claim to offer medical marijuana evaluations, as they may not be legitimate or safe. 

By choosing a certified medical professional, you can be confident that you receive a fair and accurate evaluation. Once you have received a copy of your recommendation, you can apply for a medical marijuana card.

 

Step 3: Schedule an appointment with Orange County Health Department

Congratulations on receiving approval from your doctor! You are now an official patient. However, before reaping the no retail sales tax benefit for medical marijuana, you must obtain an official identification card from the California Department of Public Health. This is similar to getting a driver’s license but much more enjoyable.

It is open from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Late Friday evening, I emailed requesting an appointment to apply for an MMIC. I received a response the following Monday morning at 8:35 a.m., offering me an appointment for Wednesday or Thursday. The turnaround time was quick. Remember to bring your letter of recommendation from a licensed physician, a current valid I.D., and proof of residency in Orange County on the day of your appointment.

Step 4: What happens during your MMIC application appointment

When you arrive for your appointment, the Office Supervisor will greet you and kindly request that you make copies of your documentation. They will also ask you to fill out any additional forms that may be necessary. Please note that the Office of Vital Records will collect a processing fee of $84. If you are a Medi-Cal beneficiary, the fee is only $42. Once your paperwork is completed, the Orange County Health Department office will verify your recommendation.

This process should be straightforward and smooth if you obtained your recommendation through the VAHA. However, suppose you received your recommendation from a doctor that the Health Department cannot contact to verify it. 

In that case, your application will be denied, and the $84 fee is non-refundable. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that your ‘Physician Statement and Recommendation’ form is from a licensed physician who can verify the status of your recommendation.

As for the length of the appointment, my own experience was very brief. My appointment was at 8:00 a.m., and I was back in my car by 8:15 a.m. It was a short, sweet, and to-the-point process!
