On October 9, 1946, the Draconids meteor shower occurred, one of the largest ever witnessed. In a similar rare phenomenon, on October 9, 1992, the Peekskill meteorite was captured by 16 different cameras. The meteorite struck its target, hitting the rear end of a car and then plunging into the gravel driveway beneath it, narrowly missing the car’s gas tank.
Annual Draconids Meteor Shower
The graphic below briefly illustrates the difference between a meteoroid, meteor, and meteorite. A meteoroid that makes it through the atmosphere and lands on the Earth is called a meteorite.

While they are still in space, space rocks are called meteoroids. Meteors were once meteoroids that entered the atmosphere at high speed and burned up. Meteor showers, where many meteors per hour are observable, can occur at regular intervals, such as annually. One such yearly event occurs each year during October, the Draconid meteor shower.
When is the best time to see the meteor shower in October 2025?
The Draconid meteor shower is best viewed from October 8 at 6:00 pm to October 9 at 7:00 am. It is the first of two meteor showers happen during October.
On October 9, 1946, the Draconids shower was much anticipated. It lasted straight through the evening, west of the Mississippi. Named after the constellation Draco, the Dragon, those watching the meteor shower reported 4,000 meteors per hour. Additionally, new radar detection technology was employed, resulting in a count of over 10,000 meteors per hour. In Southern California, at Los Angeles’s Griffith Observatory, students witnessing the end of the event saw a bolide.
The Bolide
A bolide is a meteor, specifically an exceptionally bright, electric blue-white fireball. The lustrous ball streaked through the darkness, imprinting a bright yellow train across the sky that stayed for several minutes before shifting into the shape of a horseshoe and dissipating. Bolide fireballs often occur in conjunction with sonic booms and are the result of meteoroids rapidly entering Earth’s atmosphere, compressing the air.
On June 26, 2025, 11Alive News shared a video of a bolide fireball falling from the sky. They received reports of sightings through Atlanta and the Southeast. Watch the video below to see what a bolide looks like caught on camera.
Did you know?
The largest meteorite ever found is the Hoba meteorite in Namibia, weighing approximately 66 tons. It is pictured below. Unlike most meteorites, it was never moved from its landing site due to its enormous weight.
A similar event occurred on June 2, 2016, during which witnesses saw a superbolide. A superbolide is much rarer than a bolide. It is extraordinarily bright, nearly as bright as the full moon in luminosity. In the case of a superbolide, its characteristics differ from those of a bolide because of a larger meteoroid entering the atmosphere. The video below shows the superbolide as it was caught on camera.
Similarly, below is more footage of a superbolide caught on camera.
The Peekskill Meteorite
A meteoroid that survives its trip through the atmosphere and strikes the ground is known as a meteorite. The Peekskill meteorite is estimated to have been traveling at a velocity of 200 mph through Earth’s atmosphere before making impact with a bright red Chevy Malibu car. Weighing between 26 and 28 pounds, the meteorite is one of two recorded instances in history in which a meteorite has struck a vehicle.
The photo below shows a vehicle struck by the meteorite.
As a result of many high school football games being taped that day, 16 different cameras caught the incident on camera. The video below shows the meteorite soaring over a crowd of football fans.
The image below is of an actual fragment from the Peekskill meteorite.
Although it occurred during the same time period as the annual Draconids meteor shower, the Peekskill meteorite was not from the Draconids meteor shower. Instead, in a cosmic coincidence, the Peekskill meteorite was a fragment from the main asteroid belt.
Said to have smelled of rotten eggs, the football-shaped meteorite was warm to the touch. Visit the Macovich Collection to learn more about the Peekskill Meteorite by clicking this text.

Meteorites can be classified into three main types: iron (made mostly of iron-nickel), stony (made mostly of silicate minerals), and stony-iron (a mixture of both). Iron meteorites, despite being the rarest type found on Earth, are most commonly displayed in museums.

Tips for the Best Meteor Shower Viewing Experience
If you want to watch a meteor shower tonight, it’s easy to do. Meteor showers are visible with the naked eye, so you won’t have to have any special cameras or equipment to enjoy a meteor shower. Your best bet is to find a clear viewing spot that is as far away from light pollution as possible. Fewer lights will allow you to see the meteors at their brightest and boldest.
