California’s Disturbing Statistics

Churches in California experienced 33 incidents of hostility in 2023, more than double the 15 reported in 2022. This upward trend is concerning, especially considering that 2021 saw at least 96 incidents. Consequently, the situation appears to be worsening rather than improving.

Impact of Population Size on Church Incidents

The study found that states with larger populations tended to have more incidents. As a result, the top five states with the highest number of incidents were:

  • California (33)
  • Texas (28)
  • Tennessee (26)
  • Ohio (24)
  • Florida (23)

Types of Incidents Against Churches

Out of the 436 reported incidents, 315 were acts of vandalism. While the motives behind these acts are often unknown, some appear to stem from anger toward specific churches or political motivations. Furthermore, these incidents range from minor property damage to more serious offenses, including arson and bomb threats.

Local Impact on California Churches

In June 2023, a distressing local incident occurred at the Ascension of the Lord Romanian Orthodox Church in Hayward, California. The church was broken into, resulting in the destruction of numerous religious artifacts, including a crucifix and a Bible. This incident highlights the personal and emotional toll these acts of hostility can have on religious communities.
