School staff took food from their plates with tongs over unpaid lunch debts
A concerned mother recently expressed her anger and frustration after hearing that food had been taken away from her children’s plates at Liverpool College on Queen’s Drive. According to the students who were present on Thursday, February 2, 2023, the lunch staff had taken food away from those with past-due debts, which caused them great humiliation and embarrassment. The mother was outraged by the school’s decision to do this and felt that it was an insensitive and inappropriate way to handle the situation. She expressed her concern that the school’s actions could have a lasting negative impact on her children’s well-being and emotional health. The mother is now advocating for a more compassionate and understanding approach to dealing with student debt, and hopes that this will be taken into consideration by the school.[i]
What happened to infuriate many parents?
The students informed their parents that the lunch staff made their way through the lunch hall and began removing items from the plates of the students. They reported that the staff used tongs to pick up slices of pizza, cookies, and bottles of water from the plates that had already been served to the other students. [ii]
The students were shocked and confused as to why the lunch staff was doing this and felt as if their lunch was being taken away from them. The parents were outraged and demanded answers from the school administration. [ii]

The children had already handled the food items they had been given.
So, the cafeteria staff had to dispose of them. Seeing the food they had chosen being thrown away caused several of the children to become upset. [iii]
Many quickly called their parents to ask them to add money to their school lunch accounts. This was done so that they could replace the items that had been taken away and make sure they had enough to eat for the rest of the day.[iii]

How did the parents respond to the school staff’s airing out of their debts?
Upon noticing the lunch staff’s actions, the parents admitted they were shocked and appalled. They acknowledged that the parents should be held responsible for their debts but argued that it should not come at the cost of humiliating young children. [vi]
Many believe that there are much more effective, humane methods of communicating with the parents than publicly shaming innocent youth. This could include a direct phone call or sending a letter or email to notify them of their outstanding debts. [vi]

The lunch staff’s decision to target the children was seen as a cruel and unnecessary tactic that had a negative impact on the students, and the parents were determined to ensure that this did not happen again. [vi]
Less than a year ago, California made history as the first state in the United States of America to implement a policy that provides free school breakfast and lunch for all children. The policy, which was signed into law in July 2019, was created to help alleviate the financial burden of school meals for families and ensure that children from low-income households have access to nutritious and balanced meals. The state has allocated funds to cover the costs of the meals, which are provided to all students, regardless of their family’s income level. In addition, the policy includes measures to ensure that the meals meet the nutritional standards set forth by the United States Department of Agriculture, and that the meals are appealing to students. Other parents who are also facing the same issue pointed out that many families across the city are “struggling to make ends meet due to the high cost of living.”
They say having “children call their parents telling them they need to add more money to their lunch accounts in January must have been a difficult and embarrassing experience for the families involved.” [v]
The cost of living has become so expensive that many families are having a hard time putting food on the table and affording basic necessities. This incident highlights the need for more support and assistance for families who are struggling financially.[v]

Despite the reports that have been circulating, the principal of the school has strongly denied that any student will ever be denied lunch due to a lack of funds. [v]
However, the principal did mention that the school and its catering company partner need to limit the amount of money owed to the caterer, as the current levels of debt are not sustainable. [v]

During the fiscal year 2019, an average of 20.1 million free school lunches, 1.7 million reduced-price lunches, and 7.7 million full-priced meals were served daily. [iv]
This amounts to a total of 4.9 billion lunches served throughout the entire fiscal year. This number is an increase from the year before when 4.5 billion lunches were served during the 2018 fiscal year. [iv]
The SNA believes that this increase is due to their efforts to ensure that all students, regardless of their economic status, are able to receive nutritious meals. [iv]
