One would become the 1st US flying ace

The First Aerial Dogfight emerged during WWI. The U.S. First Aero Squadron was successful in this fight, shooting down two enemy German planes over France. Despite advancements in technology, dogfighting is still a dangerous and deadly practice. It is illegal in many countries, including the United States, and those caught participating in the activity can face severe legal consequences. [iv]

The success of the U.S. First Aero Squadron was not just due to the bravery and skill of individual pilots like Campbell but also to the development of new technologies and tactics that allowed pilots to engage in dogfights more effectively. Moreover, the use of aircraft in wars would only continue to grow in importance in the coming years, leading to the development of dedicated air forces and the use of bombers to target enemy infrastructure and civilians. Pilots had to be skilled in dogfighting and have nerves of steel. They also had to be lucky enough to survive long enough to rack up the required number of kills. [vii]

The title of flying ace was not limited to Americans or even men. Women like Lydia Litvyak and Katya Budanova were also recognized as aces for their service in the Soviet Air Force during World War II. [vii]

Today, the tradition of the flying ace lives on in the air forces of many nations. Though technology has changed, the spirit of bravery and skill that defined the aces of the past continues to inspire new generations of pilots. [viii]
