National Siamese Cat Day and Siamese Cat Behavior

Siamese cat behavior sets this breed apart from other felines. These cats are exceptionally vocal and love communicating with their owners. They form strong bonds with their human families.

Siamese cats are smart and social. They often follow their owners from room to room, which is why people call them “shadow cats.” They don’t like being alone for long and do best in homes where someone is around most of the time.

This breed is known for being very affectionate and loyal. Siamese cats often pick one person as their favorite, but they stay friendly and playful with everyone in the house.

Did you know? Siamese cats have a unique color-changing coat. Their fur darkens as they grow older due to temperature-sensitive genes.

The Rich History of Siamese Cats

Siamese cats have a rich history going back centuries. They come from Thailand, which was once called Siam. Thai royalty treasured these cats and saw them as sacred companions. Ancient manuscripts from the 14th century show early images of Siamese cats, showing their importance in Thai culture.

Siamese cats started arriving in the West by the early 1900s. The breed became popular in England, where breeders worked to create the elegant look we know today. A notable cat, Ch. Bonzo, born in 1924, became the foundation for many show-quality Siamese cats in England. His descendants helped define the breed’s striking eye color and refined features.

By the 1930s, Siamese cats were well known in the United States. Breeders such as Emma C. Payne and Mrs. Alexander Pinney helped build strong bloodlines using cats from England and Thailand. Early American Siamese were valued for their graceful shape, bright coloring, and distinctive vocal personalities.

Early American Breeders and Bloodlines

An important part of American Siamese history is Dr. Joseph Thompson of San Francisco, who brought a special cat named Tai Mau to the U.S. in 1930. Tai Mau’s excellent traits influenced many Western Siamese cats, even though there was some crossbreeding with Burmese cats. This mix helped create unique lines and added to the breed’s diversity.

During the 1930s and 1940s, breeders across the country worked to improve Siamese cats by selecting for certain types and colors. Some aimed to keep the royal Bangkok bloodlines, while others added cats from different places, including England and the East. This time saw the rise of breeders and catteries that shaped the Siamese we know today.

Challenges of Non-Typical Imports

Not all cats brought from the Orient were true Siamese. Many were mixed breeds with different features, which sometimes affected the breed’s quality. Responsible breeders worked to keep the Siamese’s special traits, like their sleek bodies, wedge-shaped heads, and deep blue eyes.

Modern Siamese cats are the result of these early efforts. Their color-changing coats, talkative nature, and loving personalities show the results of centuries of careful breeding and cultural importance. National Siamese Cat Day celebrates this heritage and encourages people to appreciate these special cats.

Distinctive Physical Characteristics

Siamese cats have unique physical features. Their sleek, cream-colored fur has darker “points” on the ears, face, paws, and tail.

The color of these points can vary. Common types are seal, chocolate, blue, and lilac points. Some Siamese cats also have cream or red points, which are sometimes called flame points.

Their bright blue eyes are the breed’s most striking feature. This eye color comes from a genetic trait found only in pointed breeds. The almond shape of their eyes adds to their elegant look.

Early Siamese cats often had crossed eyes and kinked tails. Breeders worked to remove these traits, so today’s Siamese cats usually have straight tails and eyes that are properly aligned.

Did you know? Siamese cats are among the most vocal breeds. They use a wide range of sounds to communicate with their owners.

These charming cats have been featured in many movies and TV shows. “Lady and the Tramp” had two mischievous Siamese cats in a famous scene. “The Incredible Journey” showed a Siamese cat’s loyalty and smarts.

Their unique look and talkative nature make them stand out on screen. Seeing Siamese cats in movies and shows has helped more people learn about and appreciate the breed. Many people first discover Siamese cats through these pop culture moments.

Adoption Information and Resources

ARE Animal Rescue has catteries in several PetSmart stores. Volunteers are there to help visitors during set hours each week. Evening hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on weekdays.

On Saturdays, you can visit from 9 to 11 a.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. On Sundays, volunteers are there from 10 a.m. to noon and 4 to 6 p.m. These hours make it easier for working families to stop by.

If you want to adopt, fill out an online questionnaire before you visit. This helps make the process smoother and ensures a good match. The group’s main goal is to find loving, permanent homes for every animal.

Every year, more than two million animals in shelters across the country are at risk of euthanasia. By choosing to adopt, you can save lives and give animals a second chance. Jace Shoemaker-Galloway created National Siamese Cat Day to inspire more people to adopt from shelters.
